Alex Verhaest and Roel Heremans are Belgian artists and members of the collective fl_x. They explore how technology influences our stories and choices, and what this reveals about our self-perception. Verhaest creates films and interactive installations centered on language, branching narratives, and the boundaries of communication; she combines painting, video, video games, and technology to experiment with alternative modes of storytelling. Heremans creates participatory installations and guided experiences revolving around neurotechnology, ethics, and imagination, transforming questions regarding data, autonomy, and technology into immersive experiences.
In their talk, Verhaest and Heremans discuss how technology alters the relationship between artist, artwork, and audience, drawing on their own work with AI, interactive systems, and brain-computer interfaces. What do such technologies mean for authorship and freedom of choice? And who determines the course of a story or experience?
The talk complements ‘Who Speaks the Machine?’, a research exhibition at BAC ART LAB exploring human creativity, machine processes, and the boundary between the two.
