The practice of Gijs Coenen (BE) is driven by the tension between seriousness and humour. He explores the relation between art and game. The artworks become interactive objects in the intersection of sculpture, play-object and functional design. The game progresses intuitively; simple actions of the spectator result in a counter-reaction of the sculpture. The spectator becomes part of the imaginary world of the work. During the creative process, Gijs Coenen uses new technologies as well as tools and crafts. He is fascinated by how aesthetic elements such as colour, texture and figuration take on a different kind of value within this free game and how these elements feed our imagination. Art as well as game allow us to connect to reality by breaking away from it by means of an imaginary world.
